Welcome! My name is Ismael (Izzy) Castellon. As your academic advisor, my role is to help you understand and explore how to:

• read and interpret your degree plan
• identify the variety in structure and format of courses available to you
• plan for prerequisite and course sequencing requirements within your program
• select courses for the upcoming terms
• determine an appropriate course load for each term/semester
• decide if alternative forms of credit (Prior Learning, CLEP, etc.) are appropriate
• access other resources available to help you succeed.

1. New Undergraduate Student

“I’ve been accepted to CMU to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Now what do I do?”
Are you a newly admitted bachelor’s degree student? Congratulations! This appointment is best for students who have not yet met with an academic advisor and who are new to one of CMU’s bachelor’s degree programs.

2. New Graduate Student

“I’ve been accepted to CMU to pursue a master’s degree or graduate certificate. Now what do I do?”
Are you a newly admitted graduate-level student? Congratulations! This appointment is best for students who have not yet met with an academic advisor and who are new to one of CMU’s master’s degrees or graduate certificates.

"I’ve already taken some classes with CMU. What should I take next?”
Are you a current CMU student looking for course suggestions for an upcoming semester? In this appointment, we will go over your remaining requirements and what courses to register for next. We can even map out your next few semesters!

4. Degree Progress

“I don’t understand what I’m seeing on my Degree Progress page. Help!”
Are you a current CMU student with questions about your Degree Progress page? This appointment is best for students who have questions or concerns about what his or her Degree Progress page looks like and what that means for remaining degree requirements.

5. Returning CMU Student

“I took some time off from CMU. How do I get started again?”
Are you a former CMU student returning after more than three years away? Welcome back! This appointment is best for students who have previously earned credit with CMU and would like to return to complete that degree. Note: If it has been over three years since you have taken a course with CMU, please complete an application for admission prior to your advising appointment. “Should I transfer to CMU?”
Are you thinking about applying to CMU? This appointment is best for individuals who have never attended CMU, have not submitted an application, and are interested in learning more about potential transfer credit and program options. 7. Prior Learning Assessment

“Should I submit a prior learning portfolio? How much credit can I apply to my program?”
Are you a current CMU student who would like to talk about the Prior Learning Assessment? In this appointment, we can discuss where prior learning can fit in your degree plan and how much credit you may be eligible for. Please bring a copy of your résumé. 8. Probation/Suspension/Dismissal

“I’m on probation. What do I do now?”
Are you on probation, suspension, or have you been dismissed from CMU? This appointment is designed for students to discuss academic standing and plans for continuing with CMU.

9. Pre-Graduation Audit

“I think I’m close to graduation. How can I be sure I’m on track?”
This appointment is best for students who are in their final courses and want to confirm everything is in place to graduate.

10. Quick Question

“I didn’t get that follow up e-mail from our last appointment. Can you send it again?”
Do you have a quick follow-up question about a previous advising meeting or e-mail? This appointment is best for students who would like to briefly touch base with an advisor. Alternatively, you may consider sending me a quick e-mail at globaladv@cmich.edu.
Depending on the complexity of your question, please keep in mind that it may be necessary to schedule a longer follow-up appointment.
